Environmental stewardship means many things to many people on different levels. We all try to embrace and practice those principals in ways that are meaningful and sustainably actionable. Our Litchfield community continues to believe, act and invest locally… a shared belief that benefits us all. Environmental stewardship means many things to many people on different levels. So, what does LLT Stewardship actually do and what does is it mean today? We will be highlighting some recent examples over the coming weeks. It is with our deep gratitude to all of you who have invested your time, energy, skills and financial support……yesterday, today and tomorrow. In the next few weeks, we will be featuring some of our local land stewardship efforts and invite you to join us in these efforts. Improvements to Duck Boxes at Grannis Pond - contributed by David Geiger (photo 1 of duck boxes in the marsh) “I am reminded that last Fall 2019, as I scouted locations at Grannis Pond to hang up two new Wood Duck nesting boxes, made for the LLT by Dan Fowler, I found the three old nesting boxes put up back in 2005. Those three were made by my brother Bob (now gone) and his friend Peter Ellliot. They had been lost to the the marshland swamp on the north and east sides of the pond, and were peeking out of the marsh and mud because of last year's drought. I cleaned them up and screwed them to trees nearby in mid March this year. I got back to put up the two new Fowler boxes and I screwed them to trees facing Grannis Pond just below the fire pit by the horizontal cave. There is one one each side of the overpond viewing are. Look for them from the fire pit spot.” (photo 2 - wood duck photo) Building and Installing Bird Boxes Around Town – Dean Birdsall is a champion of LLT Stewardship efforts! He is a much loved LHS teacher who does yeoman’s work for LLT too! He would welcome your able bodied help….monitoring and documenting the status of each LLT property that must be done annually. Building bird boxes, maintaining trails. (photo 3- Dean) Checking on the chicks is Marie Kennedy, LLT Board Member and bird enthusiast. When not outside on the trails, Marie is also LLT's Treasurer and a Board Member on Litchfield's Audubon Chapter.
